My First Blog Post

So I don't quite know what to write here, but I think I'll just start typing.

Let me start by saying that i'm not much of a writer - never really have been. I like to use improper grammar and throw dashes and semicolons into places where they don't belong. But the good news with this blog is that I'm likely to be the only person who'll ever read it. Seriously. I don't even quite know why I'm doing it. I guess this is my version of journaling? But just with the added factor that any potential employer or friend could stumble upon and read it. Hopefully not!

To that same point, I don't really plan on keeping these blogs professional in any way. I'll just write about what I want to write about, when I want to write about it (there's a decent chance that I altogether forget to write any more blogs after this one). But this whole website is really just for me and my own fun. The portfolio page might be handy for sharing with employers, but everything else is just what I want on here - same with these blogs.

I've had some ideas in the past for topics to write about: career interests, phone usage + social media, waterloo experience, hobbies/interests, being a jack of all trades, and other miscellaneous stuff. Maybe even some philosophical thoughts about life and conversations about God. But I haven't quite written any of those blogs yet and I don't know if I will. I sometimes enjoy writing my ideas out because it helps me to go deeper in thought, but I don't see a whole lot of value in spending my time sharing those thoughts on here. I'm not Marcus Aurelius. I'll never be Marcus Aurelius :( And I just don't think I'm quite as insightful as I think I am.

This blog is more likely to end up being something that I look back on and deem to be "cringe". I'll probably be worried about what other people would think if they read this. Because that's what we do right - worry about what other people think of us. I might even worry about what people would think when they read that I'm writing about how I worry about what other people think. You know?? Crazy insightful stuff here, I told you. Anyways, it really is crazy. The amount that we do (or at least that I do) to try to be the person that we think looks best to other people. I remember in high school having to think about whether or not my walking stride looked cool. I probably looked like an idiot. But with a world of TV, celebrities, tiktok, mirrors and everything else, it's hard not to compare yourself to others. But it's pretty darn important to figure out what you're actually interested in, and what matters to you. It's a fine line to walk but there's value in not caring about what others think of you, while still holding on to the advice and opinions of the people in your life who care about you. Idk. Maybe I'm just yapping now.

Back to the topics that I mentioned (my brain bounces around a lot, and it does not come out well in writing. sorry. once again, probably only apologizing to myself here. okay side-note is over). One of the things that I would be interested in writing about is social media. It sucks. Okay yes, it is nice to be able to keep up with relatives and see updates from the lives of friends/family who maybe live far from you. That original intention was pretty nice. But nowadays, it all sucks. Maybe I'm just a negative-nancy but I really do think that social media is a truly terrible thing for the vast majority of us. One of, if not the most valuable thing that we have in this life, is time. And our phones are suddenly taking up all of our time. The fastest way to pass time is just to open your phone. Poof, time is gone. And the doom-scrolling is so bad. Plus the influence that these random people have on our lives and minds can be crazy. And yes, some people have way better self-control than others and just use instagram reels to find new fun recipes and stuff (shoutout my mom). But for the youth of today, I just feel like the internet is so dangerous to our minds.

As of recently, I've been successful in deleting all my social media apps. In the past, I had tried setting limits, tried certain apps, tried all kinds of things. I even bought a flip phone and used that for a while. But I always found my way back onto instagram reels somehow (I yearn for the Reels). Luckily though, for the last year or so, I have had quite some success. And to do so, I completely deleted instagram, and all other scrolling apps, and blocked them from my browsers. No 10-minute limit, no exceptions, no nothing. My only success has come from a complete blackout. Except I do scroll on my girlfriend's phone every once and a while :)

Anyways... I highly recommend this to anyone. Give the detox a try and see how you feel.

I had some more thoughts to add, but I'm getting real tired now so I'm gonna head to sleep. Goodnight yall (still just talking to myself). Peace out. Time to git commit to getting some sleep (idk I tried making a pun). Bye.
